Late Winter/Early Spring Flowers

If it weren't for the snow flurries in Portland, we might forget it's not quite spring yet. Our stores are bursting with ranunculus, anemones, hyacinth, tulips, flowering branches, and other early spring lovelies. Tired of the weather? Try adding a little springtime to your home or office. And forget that spring is still a few weeks more away...

Late Winter inspiration

Oh the whims of our weather. While so chilly in late winter, we start to see the earliest signs of spring. Hyacinths, ranunculus and sweet peas inspire us to dream of the next season's offerings. With of course, a little dose of moody winter color added in the mix. 

This mild season has also given us early blooming branches: favorites including prunus, forsythia, and cherry have already arrived in our stores. These beauties always brighten any room they embrace. And make you forget it is still winter in Portland.

Fall season centerpieces

The Thanksgiving holiday is this Thursday and we're really enjoying creating florals with the rich color palettes of fall. Deep burgundy, vibrant orange, peach and warm tones brighten both tables and grey skies. This arrangement contains Juliette garden roses, pin cushions, scabiosa, nandina and andromeda. Showy Ranunculus

Local and in-season ranunculus are a late winter/early spring favorite. A terrific cut flower, ranunculus have a high petal count, and offer a long vase life. Shown here are both solid and variegated varieties. Ranunculus are available in many tints and shades of white, pink, yellow, orange, and reds. Imported varieties extend availability, coming from Japan, Italy, Holland, and Chile.

Dahlias for days

Crazy for dahlias? Summer dahlias are now available in abundance at both our Sammy's locations. Choose from a large selection of colors, shapes and sizes, with different varieties available each week. Dahlias look great en masse or as part of a summer floral mix.  Give us a call at either location and we can create a custom dahlia arrangement just for you!

Spring Bouquet

While the weather hasn’t changed much here in Portland, we’re all ready for springtime! So in honor of Spring, here’s an example of a recent spring inspired bouquet. Seasonal florals shown here include ranunculus and daffodils, along with beautiful garden roses, hydrangea, and pink andromeda.

Winter holiday style

Interested in adding a seasonal touch for your winter wedding or event? Use of greenery, textures and the choice of color palette are all a great way to bring the winter season to your bouquets and floral arrangements.

To create a winter holiday look, begin with winter seasonal foliages. Cedar, pine, spruce and other winter greenery make a great arrangement base this time of year. Next, add winter textures such as berries, twigs, pods and other accents for depth and detail. Additionally, consider your floral color palette when connecting to the season. Beyond the traditional red, white and green, consider palettes such as: burgundy and cream, white and icy silver, deep reds, whites and greens, and rich jewel tones. Need some ideas? In season: dahlias

The summer dahlias are in! Shown here is a pink variety (almost neon, really), but we currently have many colors to chose from. Each week you will find that the the dahlia color and varietal selection varies. (Of course, we keep our favorites on hand, too!) Choose from styles including decorative, pom, ball, and cactus. While most cut varieties are 3-4 inch in width, larger dinner plate style dahlias can measure 8-10 inches. Stop by either our Pearl or Burnside locations to check out our selection.

Spring Blooms

A recent beautiful spring mix with all our spring favorites.  Since the spring flower season came early this year, we will soon to be saying goodbye to the peonies and lupine shown here. But summer is around the corner and that means a bounty of colorful summertime lovelies to come. Can’t wait for the dahlias!

In Season: lilac

Nothing says springtime quite like the alluring scent of fresh lilac, and finally lilac season has arrived.  A true seasonal bloom, the lilac season is only a mere few weeks in spring. Lilac is available in lovely shades of light to deep purple, with additional varieties in white and pink. By itself, or in a mix like the one shown here with double hellebore and garden roses, lilac is always an elegant choice for the spring season.

Wedding style: textured bouquets

Textured wedding bouquets come in all shapes, sizes and use varieties of product. Adding texture to your bouquet adds complexity and interest. A textured bouquet is achieved through combining various flowers, accents, and foliages in different shapes, sizes and types. Some of the unique textured elements in the bouquets pictured are succulents, fern curls, berries, pods and special seasonal blooms.

In Season: ranunculus

This year’s ranunculus have been nothing short of spectacular. We just can’t get enough. Ranunculus are a popular spring bloom, that have a round shape with a dense amount of petals. They are available in a variety of colors including shades of white, pink, peach/orange, yellow, red and plum. Blooms are typically one to two inches in diameter, but this year's crop are showy and big. Truly a Sammy’s favorite bloom!

Looking for an interesting and unusual flower to add to your winter mixes?  In a large variety of shapes, sizes and colors, exotic proteas are a terrific, long lasting bloom. Blushing bridal bouquets

Fall rose favorites

With a little crispness in the air, we’ve begun to sense the change to fall. Rich palettes of reds, oranges, golds and brown signify the fall season and these rose favorites blend perfectly into the classic autumnal palette. On top, Matilde is a beautiful, large rust red rose. On the right is the classic Freedom rose which is the truest of reds. On the bottom, the Coffee Break rose is a wonderful copper. And Cherry Brandy, shown left, transitions from red to a golden center. All these beauties are all great performers and open to large, stunning blooms.

In the mix: dahlias

The dahlia season begins in early summer and extends generally to early October. Their vibrant colors and variety of shapes and sizes makes them a great focal flower that pairs well with smaller more delicate blooms. Beautiful both on their own, they are wonderful in textured mixes like the ones shown here. Now is the time to get your final dahlia fix for the season, before they are gone until next year.
