Our Favorite Roses

Since Valentine’s is just around the corner, we thought we would share some of our favorite roses with you. Of course, it would be impossible to pick just one as there are so many gorgeous types and varieties available. So we will just start with a few by color.

Shown above are three favorite large standard roses. The beautiful red is the classic Freedom. It’s every thing one wants in a red rose in a perfect pure red and shape. Next, the striking bi-color rose shown is Circus. It excites in intense yellow and transitions to red at its tips. And the lovely bi-color pink rose is Esparance, a romantic favorite in cream and soft pink.

Next we would like to share two locally grown lovelies. On the left, is the sweet apricot peach Prima Donna and to the right, the showy bright pink Marina rose. Be sure to check out our Arrangements tab on Sammysflowers.com to see all the roses in action.

Color study: yellows and oranges

Bring on the citrus. Bright yellows and oranges with accents of green are sure to brighten the day. This time of year, everyone wants bright. Here are two recent sunny examples, guaranteed to break through the winter grey.

Tillandsia Care

Surviving without the need for soil and receiving most nutrients from the air, tillandsias (or air plants) do love a weekly bath. Submerge them in clean water for about an hour, longer in dry environments. And if their leaves start to close up, this indicates dehydration and the need for a longer soak.

Flowers to wear

Not the basic white wrist corsage, these two examples are colorful accessories. Shown in vibrant yellow and black, with fragrant freesia, billy balls, agonis and begonia leaf. And in purple and silver, with dendrobium orchids, brunnia, and scented geranium leaf. Tiara optional!

Amaryllis Care

Planning on giving (or receiving) a winter Amaryllis plant this season? Well, you are in luck. They are easy to care for. Just water only when top inch of soil is dry to the touch and place in a warm, ideally sunny location.

After flowering, the bulb can be reused by following these steps. Remove the faded flowers and then the stem once it sags. Treat bulb and its leaves like a normal house plant for the summer. Once the leaves turn yellow in fall, cut them to about 2 inches and remove bulb from soil. Clean and store in a cool place (40-50 degrees) for a minimum of 6 weeks. Plant bulbs about 8 weeks before you would like to bloom.

We’ve been busy getting ready for the holidays and our stores are bursting with wonderful gifts, holiday decor, and seasonal embellishments. Some of our favorite gifts include our handmade Dellarobia wreaths available in candlering, 24" and 30" sizes. Choose from amaryllis, paperwhites, and poinsettias to brighten any room. We also have garland, ornaments, cut Noble fir trees, and of course, a large selection seasonal greens, berries, branches and floral accents. As the song goes... it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

Succulent Terrarium Care

So you have a new succulent terrarium, now what? Place the terrarium in a bright location, ideally a window with lots of indirect sunlight. Succulents and cactus require very little water, just a dribble every couple of weeks or so, and even less in winter. Let dry completely between waterings. Remove any dry leaves as needed. If your terrarium includes a tillandsia (air plant), remove to soak in water for a half hour or so about once a week.

About Flowers: Peonies!

Our local peony season came a little late this year- sadly, missing Mother's day, but available for those early June weddings! While peonies typically bloom for only about two weeks, early to late season varieties enable us to enjoy them for about 6 weeks in spring. And there are so many gorgeous varieties and colors to chose from. Peonies come in single, japanese, semi-double, bomb and full double blooms and range from white, cream, yellow, pink and red.

Freesia has a soft, sweet scent and is available in a large variety of colors including: white, yellow, purple, red, pink, lavendar, orange and bicolor varieties. It has a arched stem which creates a graceful shape and holds up well out of water making it a excellent choice for boutonnieres and bouquets.

Lisianthus has rounded, multi-petal blooms which can often resemble a rose. Stems have multiple blossoms and come in white, peach, pink, lavendar, purple and pale green. Mixes well with other flower combinations and a favorite for bridal bouquets.

Phalaenopsis Orchids make a special gift and with a few tips are relatively easy to care for. Orchids are all about location. They love a room filled with bright light that is warm during the day and cooler at night. They only need to be watered every 10-14 days, a good soak will do the trick.

About Flowers: Rose types

What is the difference between a standard rose and a garden rose? The garden rose shown in the bottom pic has a beautiful "cabbage" like shape. The standard rose (shown above) has a graceful spiral shape. Additionally, garden roses are often fragrant, which makes them popular for bridal bouquets.

Spray roses have clusters of blooms, typically 3-5 buds per stem. They are smaller than the standard rose. They mix well with standard roses and are terrific to use for corsage and boutonnieres.

The Fiddle Leaf Fig has a fabulous cousin we would like you to meet. The Rubber plant is a terrific houseplant, in fact, it's considered easy to care for. It's happy in moderate to low lighting and can be watered once a week. This variety has handsome, dark foliage.

Now that you've received your beautiful arrangement, what should you do to keep it looking it's best? Remember three simple things: Keep flowers cool, hydrated and clean.

1) Cool - keep flowers away from direct sunlight, heating / cooling vents and heat generating appliances. 2) Hydrated- remember to check the water level in your vase. 3) Clean - replace water and when possible re-cut flower stems.

We thought we would share one of our favorite plants. The Fiddle Leaf Fig has dramatic, large leaves that really make a statement. Part of the ficus family, it's a slow grower, and prefers indirect light. Keep it happy by avoiding overwatering and household drafts.
